www.theonepersonproject.org

Children at the newly-built Muvuma Orphanage; carrying-in supplies from the shipping container. The orphanage also supports children and youth with albinism

It is hard to believe that before we came on-board on our 2013 trip the orphanage walls were only a few feet high.

In 2011 the Kahama District donated land so that two small orphanages could combine to become the new Muvuma Orphanage. A volunteer committee of local women worked extremely hard to raise funds for the new building, as well as looking after and finding funds for 18 orphans. We decided to add our support, and a medical volunteer on the trip, Nancy Comeau, donated $1,000 US towards construction, which allowed over four-thousand bricks to be added!

Since then we have managed to send enough funds to finish the building. We still need to raise around $9,000 to get the interior to a stage where up to 50 children can be housed. Even so, the existing orphans moved in before Christmas, and the Orphanage Head, Lucia has been able to take in ten more orphans!

Our amazing Agent, Emmanuel, took the 18 children and youth to see their new home! It isn't complete but we hope to have the children in there before Christmas. With your help we will continue to fund-raise and finish the orphanage in the new year, at which time the Muvuma ladies will bring 30 or more vulnerable children in to the family!

The Muvuma Orphanage is a separate, locally-run NGO but we have added our support. It took 2 years for the Muvuma ladies to raise enough funds to build the first two-feet of the structure. The Muvuma Committee is in complete control of the orphanage and how it is run but we maintain control of the funds we donate. We send the funds to our agent, Emmanuel, who pays the materials and labour bills directly.

We know how hard our small team here in Canada works to raise funds and awareness, and we greatly admire the dedication of the Muvuma ladies who continue to raise funds and care for the orphans on a daily basis.
The fact that the
orphanage protects children with albinism adds extra urgency to the building
being completed swiftly. People with
albinism have little or no pigment to their skin and a small number of witch
doctors exploit the old superstition that the limbs of albinistic people
contain magical properties, which results in adults and children with albinism
being persecuted, dismembered or killed.
We need another $20,000 to finish the building but are have to raise $10,000 immediately to get the building finished to a stage where the children can move in before the rainy season starts! Firstly, we need to raise $5,000 to dig out the septic fields and install septic tanks and half of the planned toilets and sinks. Next the external doors and bathroom doors - just the minimum to make the house safe for the children to move in; $1,000. A final $4,000 will make the home habitable and provide beds and essentials for the 18 children.

Although there are around 125 languages
spoken in Tanzania, the country officially operates under a bilingual system.
While Kiswahili is the language of instruction in primary school, students are
required to read and write in English to complete their secondary school
education. English is the dominant global language of communication, business, diplomacy,
entertainment and the internet, and understandably, the Tanzanian Government wants to level the playing field.
Kahama. As well as shipping we have set up a number of programs in Kahama and
have built an orphanage. At this point we intend to ship one final container to
Kahama in 2016.

Clothing. Indiscriminately sending clothing to impoverished areas can cause problems as the garments often end up flooding the black-market and depriving local garment-makers and sellers of their income. We do not ship a lot of clothing but when we do we have a major advantage over many organizations as we regularly visit the region and can see the results of our donations and make changes if they are causing problems. The families and orphanages that receive the donated clothing and shoes would not be buying clothes from the local markets, they would simply go without.

Buying locally. When
we can, we do purchase resources and supplies in Kahama. Our strategy of
strengthening the whole community through sending medical, educational and
entrepreneurial resources will translate into locals buying local, a win-win situation!
At present most families are not in the position to help the economy – they
live day to day surviving on the ‘crops’ they can grow in the patches of earth
outside their huts. The ripple-effect purchases we do make in the Kahama region
include:

Twenty children and youth currently live in this rented 4-room house, which will not be available for much longer. The Kahama District Council donated land for a new orphanage, which will house up to 50 children. The small group of local women, who donate their time and limited funds to running the orphan-group, raised enough funds to start the building, a difficult task in a rural area struggling with the effects of extreme poverty. Check out the previous Muvuma blogs (click on the Muvuma link on the right or scroll through the blog) to see how the orphanage will be transforming lives.
Joseph and Emmanuel are amazing, hardworking men who live in Kahama, Tanzania. Both have made every effort to help us on our visits to Kahama, acting as drivers, translators and tour guides! We value their friendship greatly. (You can read more about Joseph in my Nov. 15th 2013 blog.)

Earlier this year we asked Emmanuel if he would be our representative in Kahama, and thankfully - he agreed! Thanks to technology and our annual visits, we were already in regular contact with the officials and coordinators of the programs we are supporting or have set up, but having Emmanuel on the ground has allowed us to act and react much more swiftly: his local knowledge and insights are invaluable.

Emmanuel graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam with a bachelor degree in political science and public administration. He currently owns and runs a day care in Kahama, runs training sessions for the Barrick Gold mining company and teaches written and spoken English to children. We are extremely fortunate to have him on our team.

We regularly take

Almost there! The 20 children in the existing tiny orphanage building (which is only available until November) will soon have a new home. And 30 more vulnerable children including those surviving on the streets will soon find a safe-haven. We have recently sent a further $500 towards purchasing materials for the roof and are holding fundraisers to complete the building. Check out the other Muvuma posts to find out about the importance of a safe place for the children.
Congratulations to Rylan,(right) One Person 2010 Vice President.
www.theonepersonproject.org

Rylan is a remarkable young man who took the 2010 (self-funded) trip to E. Africa and personally raised over $12,000 throughout the year. His dream was to send a library to Africa and to that end he helped to solicit book donations and joined us in raising the funds to ship the container, which was also filled with medical, educational, entrepreneur and family resources.

We sent over 16,000 books to Rwanda to create library shelves in the village schools. Rylan continues to support us at a personal level and through his business, Coffee News.
www.theonepersonproject.org

When One Person first started in 2006, co-founder and President, Brenda Lowe asked family and friends to sponsor World Vision children in the Kahama District. In the end we found sponsors for over 50 children in the area, plus more in Muhanga, Rwanda. W.V. is due to leave the Kahama region in the next few years so some families are continuing to sponsor through One Person - a great decision as we will visit the children on our trips and will deliver and bring back photos, reports and personal messages!

Brenda is also providing funding for a young man's education. His name is Joseph and I met him on my trip in 2012. He is an amazing young man who has been acting as an unpaid guide and interpreter whenever we visit Kahama.
This is an excerpt from Brenda's Planet Ranger entry earlier this year.

"I met with my friend Joseph for a trip to the bank to deposit $900 I’d saved for him. I first met Joseph on my trip in 2009. He’s waiter at the Pineridge and has been our salvation on these trips. Joseph is one of the most resourceful, thoughtful, caring, generous people I’ve ever met. He helps us with everything we need and would never ask for anything in return.

I made a decision on my last trip here that I would like to help Joseph get a better education so he can find decent employment. Joseph works long hours as a waiter and makes less than $100 per month. He supports his family with anything he has left over after he pays his living expenses and will never be able to change his situation without some help. He’ll need two years of upgrading and then will be allowed to attend a vocational school for training to work at the mine.

When we visited Joseph’s parents yesterday, they thanked me for helping him saying that they never had enough to pay for him to get an education and are so grateful for him to have this chance. They said that the whole family depends on Joseph and when he has a good job, he’ll be able to help them."
www.theonepersonproject.org

Some people and businesses
tell us that they prefer to support organizations that affect their own
community – which we love to hear because One Person provides life-changing
opportunities for communities in the Okanagan and in the whole of B.C. (And
beyond!)

Since our inception in 2006
our President Brenda Lowe has held presentations in schools, church halls,
healthcare facilities, in offices, in community centres and in her own home. Brownies, Guides, Scouts, school children,
school teachers, medical professionals, families, service groups, store/office
staff and clergy and congregations have seen our presentations and took part in
our Q & A’s.

Local children and youth
especially are benefiting from the role that One Person plays. We provide an avenue
to help children to become socially aware and to be able to give to a
community. Parents understand that it is not just the designated charity that
is benefitting from a family’s involvement; children are also learning to be empathetic,
compassionate and caring.

A 2013 study by the United
Nations found that 88 percent of
(American) children donate to charities – that’s 7 out of 8 children
aged 8 to 19! Interestingly the study
showed that role-modelling alone does not affect children’s giving-behaviour.

“Parents’ giving to charity is not enough to teach children to be
charitable,” the report states, “Focused, intentional teaching by talking to
children about charity is what works. This is true for children in families at
all income levels and across gender, race, and age.”

Children of all ages have talked with us and contributed to our programs
in Kahama, Tanzania and Muhanga, Rwanda. Children and youth donate school and
soccer resources, they help to collect, sort and pack donated items into our
shipping containers – they even help paint our shipping containers and then they help raise funds to ship
the containers! From donating birthday money, to recycling bottles, from
holding lemonade stands, bake sales and book drop-off points to helping at our
fundraising events.

The children and youth in this community get to see photographs and hear
stories of the children and youth they are helping to become self-sufficient in
our sponsor-communities in East Africa. The children here learn new skills,
feel empowered and know that the actions of one person can make a difference in
the life of a child, a family, a community – whether it be on their own
doorstep or on another continent.
